Why rotten vegetables and solutions
Vegetable rot, particularly during the nursery stage, is a common issue that significantly affects seedling growth. It can lead to root rot, which is caused by several factors: (1) low ground temperature, (2) insufficient light, (3) high humidity in the seedbed, and (4) poor ventilation, which weakens the seedlings and makes them more susceptible to disease. The typical symptoms include rust-colored root rot, slow growth after emergence without new root development, and in severe cases, the plants may stop growing altogether. The leaves often turn gray-green and gradually yellow, eventually leading to plant wilting and death.
To address this problem, one effective approach is to apply organic fertilizers. These help improve the seedlings' resistance to disease while also increasing the soil temperature in the seedbed, reducing the chances of rot. Before planting, mix finely crushed hot manure with the bed soil in a 5:1 ratio to create a healthy growing medium. It's best to use minimal nitrogen fertilizer as a base, and ensure that all organic materials are fully decomposed. Using a specialized fermentation agent, like a goldfish starter, can prevent "seedling burn" and nutrient loss.
In greenhouses or controlled nurseries, watering should be carefully managed. Only water when the topsoil begins to dry out slightly, but avoid overwatering. This helps maintain proper moisture levels without creating overly wet conditions that encourage rot.
Once the cotyledons have unfolded, it's important to ventilate the seedbed on clear, warm days. Remove the cover, spread a thin layer of dry soil over the seedbed, and then replace the cover. This reduces soil humidity and increases temperature, both of which are beneficial for seedling health.
Another effective method is using rooting agents containing beneficial microbes. These products improve the root environment, promote early germination, increase soil temperature, and help weak seedlings develop into strong ones. Products like Jinbao Rooting Agent offer both preventive and curative effects. For example, during the seeding stage, mix 50ml of the product with 10–20 times water and blend it into 50kg of nutrient-rich soil or 4–5m² of seedbed. This promotes quick and uniform germination, preventing weak seedlings. During the seedling stage, apply a 30-fold dilution of the product at 5–10kg per square meter through watering or spraying. This encourages longer main roots, thicker roots, and more lateral roots, improving overall root strength and nutrient absorption, ultimately preventing rot and producing healthier seedlings.
