Hybrids
Practice has shown that under natural storage conditions, the viability of maize hybrids tends to decline as the storage period increases. The longer the seeds are stored, the more significant the reduction in their germination capacity. According to experimental data, when using the same hybrid corn seed combination, after one year of storage, the germination potential of the seeds decreased by approximately 12%, the emergence rate dropped by about 14%, and the overall reduction rate was around 1.1%. After two years of storage, the reduction rate increased to 5.2%. Therefore, it is advisable not to use old seeds in corn production, especially those stored for more than three years.
Old seeds, often referred to as "chen seeds," differ from fresh seeds in several ways. These seeds have typically been stored and dried for extended periods, leading to a darker color and harder embryos. They are also more prone to infestation by pests. It's common to see worm damage, and when you take a handful of these seeds, you may notice a powdery residue on your hands after pulling them out. This indicates that the seeds have deteriorated and may not perform well in the field, affecting both yield and crop quality. To ensure optimal results, it's best to use freshly harvested or properly stored seeds within a reasonable time frame.
