Hybrids
Practice has shown that, under natural storage conditions, the viability of maize hybrids tends to decline as the storage period increases. The longer the seeds are stored, the more significant the loss in germination capacity. According to experimental data, when using the same hybrid corn variety, after one year of storage, the germination potential of the seeds decreases by approximately 12%, the emergence rate drops by around 14%, and the overall reduction rate is about 1.1%. After two years of storage, the reduction rate rises to 5.2%. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to avoid using old seeds in corn production, especially those stored for more than three years.
Old seeds, or "chen seeds," differ from fresh ones in several ways. They are typically stored and dried for extended periods, leading to a darker color and harder embryos. These seeds are also more prone to infestation by pests. It's common to find worm holes in the seed pile, and when you touch the seeds, they often leave a powdery residue on your hands. This not only affects the quality of the seeds but can also lead to poor crop performance if used in planting. To ensure optimal yield and plant health, it's best to use fresh seeds whenever possible.
