How to prevent rice leaf roller
The rice leaf roller is a serious pest that primarily affects rice crops. The larvae feed on the upper epidermis and mesophyll of the leaves, leaving only the transparent epidermis behind, which results in white or pale patches on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, entire fields can appear dull and unhealthy, leading to significant yield losses.
Initially, newly hatched larvae climb to the tip of the rice leaves and wrap the leaf edges, forming what is known as the "leaflet stage." By the third instar, they begin to roll the leaves lengthwise, creating distinct white bands. As the larvae grow, their feeding becomes more intense, and they move frequently between leaves, causing further damage. Eventually, the affected leaves turn completely white and dry out, making the entire rice field look barren.
This pest is known for its long-distance migration and has multiple generations depending on the region. In northern areas like Hebei and Shandong, it typically completes 2-3 generations per year. In central and southern regions such as Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and northern Zhejiang, there are 4-5 generations. In Hunan, Jiangxi, and southern Zhejiang, up to 5-6 generations occur, while in southern provinces like Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi, 6-7 generations are common. In Lingshui County, Hainan Province, as many as 10-11 generations can be observed annually.
Rice leaf roller thrives in warm and humid conditions, particularly in weedy and moist environments. It is most active during the growing season when temperatures are high and rainfall is frequent.
To manage this pest effectively, early intervention is key. During the egg-hatching period, farmers can apply insecticides such as 1.8% Abamectin (Blueberry) at a rate of 75-100 ml per acre, or 2% Abamectin (Triton) at 70-100 ml per acre. Another option is 5% Emamectin Benzoate Soluble Granules at 25 grams per mu. These should be mixed with at least two barrels of water (30 pounds per barrel) and applied once every 10 days for best results. Spraying in the evening is recommended, as it enhances the effectiveness of the treatment and reduces evaporation. Regular monitoring and timely application are essential to prevent severe damage and ensure healthy rice production.
