Geese skillfully prevent heatstroke in summer
Geese are naturally covered in feathers, with dense velvet down and a thick layer of subcutaneous fat that helps them adapt to cold climates and resist heat. However, during the hot summer months, geese often experience discomfort due to high temperatures, leading to reduced appetite, weight loss, and increased stress from insects like mosquitoes and flies. This not only affects their growth and meat quality but also causes egg-laying hens to stop producing eggs altogether. To help reduce heat stress in geese, several effective measures can be taken.
One approach is to raise the pens by about 2 meters above the ground and install a ceiling made of white foam panels, approximately 1.5 to 2.5 cm thick. These panels provide insulation and can lower the temperature inside the housing by 2°C to 4°C, making it more comfortable for the birds.
Another method involves covering the roof of the shed with a thick layer of rice straw, wheat straw, or hay—around 15 to 20 cm deep. Sprinkling water over this layer keeps it moist, which helps absorb and dissipate heat more effectively, reducing the amount of heat entering the enclosure.
Painting the walls of the pens with lime or white paint and covering the roof with reflective materials can significantly increase light reflection, thereby minimizing heat absorption. This simple yet effective technique enhances the overall cooling effect of the environment.
Planting climbing vines such as grapes, sponge gourds, or pumpkins around the shed allows the plants to grow over the walls and roof, creating natural shade and reducing solar radiation. This not only cools the area but also improves air quality and provides a more pleasant living space for the geese.
Trimming nearby shrubs and flowers can further reduce the amount of direct sunlight and reflected heat around the building, contributing to a cooler environment. Installing shaded awnings on doors, windows, and open areas also helps block excess sunlight and maintain a lower temperature inside.
A fan can be installed in the shed to circulate air and remove hot air, improving ventilation and comfort for the geese. During peak heat hours, spraying or flushing the roof and outer walls with cool well water can enhance evaporative cooling, providing additional relief from high temperatures.
By implementing these strategies, goose farmers can create a more comfortable and healthy environment for their birds, ensuring better growth, productivity, and overall well-being even during the hottest days of summer.
