Geese skillfully prevent heatstroke in summer

Geese are naturally covered in feathers, with dense velvet down and a thick layer of subcutaneous fat that helps them adapt to cold climates and resist heat. However, during the hot summer months, the intense heat can be extremely stressful for geese. They often lose their appetite, become restless, and suffer from mosquito and fly bites, which negatively affects their growth, weight gain, and overall health. Egg-laying geese may even stop laying eggs entirely during this time. To help reduce heat stress and keep geese comfortable, several effective cooling methods can be implemented. First, raising the pens by about 2 meters above the ground and installing white foam panels (1.5 to 2.5 cm thick) as ceilings can significantly lower the temperature inside the housing by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. This insulation helps block heat from entering the space. Another option is to cover the roof of the shed with a 15 to 20 cm thick layer of rice straw, wheat straw, or hay. Keeping this layer moist by sprinkling water not only adds a cooling effect but also reduces the amount of heat absorbed by the structure. Painting the walls of the pens with lime or white paint, and covering the roof with reflective materials, enhances light reflection and minimizes heat absorption. This simple yet effective method can make a big difference in maintaining a cooler environment. Planting climbing vines such as grapes, sponge gourds, and pumpkins around the shed allows the plants to grow over the walls and roof, creating natural shade and reducing solar radiation. This not only cools the area but also improves the aesthetic of the surroundings. Trimming nearby vegetation and flowers around the house can further reduce the amount of heat reflected from the ground and surrounding structures, contributing to a more comfortable living space for the geese. Installing shaded awnings on doors, windows, and open areas of the shed can provide additional protection from direct sunlight. This is especially useful during peak daylight hours when temperatures are highest. A fan system installed inside the shed can help remove hot air and improve air circulation, making the environment more pleasant for the birds. It's an affordable and efficient way to manage indoor temperature. Finally, during the hottest part of the day, using a sprayer to mist the roof and outer walls with cool well water can enhance heat dissipation and provide immediate relief to the geese. This method is both practical and effective in extreme conditions. By implementing these strategies, goose farmers can create a more comfortable and healthy environment for their birds, ensuring better growth, productivity, and well-being throughout the summer season.
