Uncharted Territory:: Kindergarten
Driving away from her school on Monday felt like leaving a piece of my heart behind. The lump in my throat made it hard to breathe, and I could barely hold back the tears. Motherhood has brought me so many joys, but this—letting her step into this next chapter—is bittersweet. Loving her means letting her go, even when it feels like my heart might break.
After weeks of debating, researching, and weighing options, we finally landed on a decision we’re all excited about. Homeschooling was on the table, as were countless other ideas, but in the end, we found something that felt right. It wasn’t an easy choice, but now that we’ve made it, I feel peace. And if things change down the road, we’ll adapt. That’s the beauty of parenting—you don’t have to get it perfect the first time.
Kindergarten is like popping the bubble of our cozy little world. For years, it’s been just the two of us—me, her, and our little bubble of love. Now, she’s stepping out into the wider world, meeting new friends, and soaking in new experiences. As her mom, I’m trying to find the balance between letting go and staying close. Some mornings, I wonder if I’ve said or done enough, but then I remind myself that love isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence.
Her first day of school was filled with excitement and nerves. She picked out her outfit herself—a pretty dress, of course—and helped pack her lunch. We even got her a cute owl backpack instead of one with flashy cartoon characters. It’s these small moments that make me realize how quickly she’s growing up. Already, her nails are chipped from the weekend’s adventures, and she’s eager to tell me about her day.
Every morning, I kiss her goodbye and whisper, “Have a great day!†But deep down, I’m cheering her on from afar. I want her to explore, to learn, and to discover who she is. At night, those hugs feel deeper, like I’m holding on just a little tighter. Conversations are more meaningful now, and I cherish every word.
Life is unpredictable, and I often think about the words of Leo F. Buscaglia: "Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time." I don’t know what lies ahead, but I trust that we’ll figure it out together. For now, I’ll keep packing lunches, picking out outfits, and offering support in any way I can.
This journey isn’t just hers—it’s ours. And as she writes her story, I’ll be there, cheering her on with every brushstroke of her Crayola masterpiece.
