Postharvest management of grapes

After the harvest of grape clusters, the continued growth of the vine can consume a significant amount of nutrients from the plant. In addition to practices like topping and removing shoots to manage vine growth, applying a 0.05% long-term growth inhibitor can also be effective in slowing down excessive vine development and reducing nutrient depletion. Once the fruit has been harvested, the grapevine may experience a significant loss of nutrients. To restore its vitality and improve photosynthetic efficiency, it's important to apply foliar fertilizer promptly. A solution of 0.2% urea and 0.2% dipotassium phosphate can be sprayed every 10 days, with 2–3 applications recommended. Additionally, in the fall, it's advisable to apply a base fertilizer. This typically involves spreading 2,000 tons of organic compost or manure per acre, mixing it with 20 kg of superphosphate, and placing it into trenches for optimal nutrient absorption. Pest and disease control remains essential even after harvest. Spraying a 200-times diluted Bordeaux mixture, or solutions such as 50% Ketect WP (500 times), 65% Difenoconazole WP (500 times), or 70% Thiophanate-methyl WP (1,000 times) every 10–15 days can help prevent infections and keep the vineyard healthy. Soil cultivation is also crucial, especially if the soil is compacted or poorly drained. After harvesting, regular tilling and weeding help loosen the soil, improve aeration, and enhance water and nutrient retention, which supports the growth of new shoots. Finally, after removing the leaves from the grapevines, it’s important to combine this with winter pruning. All fallen leaves and debris should be cleared from the vineyard, removed, and either destroyed or buried deeply to reduce the risk of disease carryover into the next season.
