Abbott launches automatic screening test for hepatitis B
Abbott has introduced an automated screening test for hepatitis B, offering a more efficient and reliable method for detecting the virus in blood donations. The new system includes the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test and the HBsAg confirmation test, both of which are essential tools in identifying hepatitis B infections.
The Prism system, developed by Abbott (based in Abbott Park, Illinois, USA), is designed to streamline the testing process. Recently, the FDA approved the Prism HB core antigen test, and additional hepatitis and retroviral tests are currently under review by the agency. This system is already being used in 30 countries, where it consolidates multiple testing procedures into one automated platform, reducing the need for manual processes and improving overall efficiency.
With built-in safety features, the Prism system ensures accurate tracking and monitoring of each specimen throughout the testing process. It provides comprehensive documentation and quality control, making it easier for laboratories to maintain high standards. The system can process up to 160 samples per hour, allowing more than 1,200 samples to be tested within an eight-hour shift.
This advancement represents a significant step forward in blood screening technology, helping to ensure the safety of the blood supply while improving operational efficiency for medical facilities. The integration of automation not only speeds up the process but also reduces the potential for human error, enhancing the accuracy of results.
