New breakthrough in telemedicine iPad will be used for fetal defect monitoring

Release date: 2010-10-14

A startup focused on telemedicine software and services, created by a former executive at Texas Instruments (India), has partnered with an Indian chain hospital to provide an ultrasound platform designed to help reduce neonatal defects. The platform will attempt to use Apple's iPad and iPhone as a detection platform to screen for fetal defects.
Developed by i2i Telesolutions, the platform will connect ultrasound diagnosticians around the world to help experts monitor the pregnancy process and assess and report on the health of the fetus via the Internet or wireless mobile networks. The startup has used the iPhone as a telemedicine telemedicine tool. It now wants to use the iPad to promote the health of the fetus.
Dr. S. Suresh, Director of MediScan Systems (Chennay, India), said that up to 70% of birth defects are preventable, detectable and treatable, thus reducing the impact on children's disabilities. “An estimated 7.9 million children per year [6% of the global total birth rate] have serious genetic or part of genetically derived birth defects”. There are approximately 30 million born babies in India each year, and an estimated 1.5 to 2 million of them are born with serious birth defects. Serious birth defects can be fatal; even if they are not fatal, most of these conditions can lead to lifelong disability," Suresh said.
During the 11th to 13th week of pregnancy, timely monitoring and structural screening of pregnant women is “a vital preventive and corrective measure that should be taken in the early stages of pregnancy,” he added. “Unfortunately, for a country like India where a large number of babies are born each year, the number of trained fetus medical experts who can handle possible fetal abnormalities is too small.”
The ability to securely transmit ultrasound images and data to experts around the world on platforms such as the iPhone or iPad "can radically transform the way people in remote areas enjoy health care," said Arindam, senior vice president of i2i TeleSolutions Sen said.
With the early use of the iPhone as a visual inspection platform, i2i will use the iPhone and iPad and its graphics capabilities to create a standard platform for birth defect screening.
