Clinical Data Storage System CDW-H for therapeutic research

Release date: 2009-07-03

In 2009, IBM announced the successful completion of a clinical research data storage system developed in collaboration with the University of North Carolina Health Care School. This innovative system is designed to speed up the development of new treatment methods for serious conditions such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and cancer.
The Carolina Data Warehouse for Health (CDW-H) system enables researchers to analyze patient data within seconds, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual reviews of medical records and treatment protocols. This not only improves efficiency but also enhances the accuracy of findings by providing real-time insights.

“With the implementation of CDW-H, we are now able to deliver critical information to our researchers, staff, and doctors quickly,” said Dr. Donald Spencer, deputy director of medical information at the UNC Health Care System. “The system also allows patients to access information about their diagnoses and treatment options, which empowers us to make more informed decisions and ultimately improve patient care.”
Leveraging IBM’s global expertise in software and hardware solutions, the CDW-H system focuses on disease management and treatment evaluation, particularly for diabetes. Dr. Spencer noted that the system has significantly reduced the time required for clinical research. What once took weeks can now be completed in just seconds. Additionally, the entire preparatory process for studies is now approved faster by regulatory bodies, cutting down the time needed to access data from several months to just a few weeks. This advancement marks a major step forward in healthcare research and delivery.
