Clinical Data Storage System CDW-H for therapeutic research

Release date: 2009-07-03

In 2009, IBM announced the completion of a clinical research data storage system developed in collaboration with the University of North Carolina Health Care School. This innovative system is designed to speed up the development of new treatment methods for chronic and complex diseases, including diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and cancer. By leveraging advanced data management technologies, the system enables researchers to access and analyze vast amounts of patient data more efficiently than ever before.

The Carolina Data Warehouse for Health (CDW-H) plays a key role in this initiative. With CDW-H, medical professionals can now quickly retrieve and analyze patient information, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual reviews of medical records and treatment plans. This not only saves valuable time but also improves the accuracy and consistency of data-driven decisions in clinical settings.

Dr. Donald Spencer, Deputy Director of Medical Information at the University of North Carolina Health Care, emphasized the importance of the system. “With the implementation of CDW-H, we are able to deliver critical information to our researchers, staff, and physicians in real-time,” he said. “The system also supports patients in accessing general information about their diagnosis and treatment options, which empowers them to make more informed decisions and enhances the overall quality of care.”

Powered by IBM's global expertise in software and hardware solutions, CDW-H focuses on improving disease management and treatment evaluation, particularly for conditions like diabetes. According to Dr. Spencer, the system has significantly reduced the time required for clinical research. What once took weeks to complete now happens in just seconds. Additionally, the entire process for preparing studies has become more streamlined, with regulatory approval times decreasing from months to just a few weeks. This efficiency allows healthcare providers to act faster and improve patient outcomes.
