China's congenital heart disease interventional closure is attracting international attention

On July 30, 2009, a groundbreaking event took place in the catheterization lab of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. Professor Zhang Zhiwei, a renowned expert in congenital heart disease and deputy director of the Guangdong Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, performed a perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD) interventional procedure. The surgery was broadcast live via satellite to the Latin American Interventional Cardiology Conference (SOLACI) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where it received widespread acclaim from both domestic and international medical professionals. This operation marked a significant milestone as Professor Zhang used a bioceramic membrane occluder, known as Cera, which was developed in China. Unlike traditional occluders made from nickel-titanium alloy, the Cera device is coated with a titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic layer using high-energy ion-precipitation technology. This innovation enhances corrosion resistance, improves biocompatibility, and reduces the risk of complications such as platelet adhesion, hemolysis, and postoperative thrombosis. The procedure was not only a technical success but also a demonstration of China's growing influence in the field of interventional cardiology. During the conference, two similar operations were conducted by Professor Zhang and another surgeon, both completed within an hour and without any adverse effects. Post-operative evaluations showed that the patients' heart murmurs had disappeared completely, and imaging confirmed successful septal closure with no residual shunting. The live broadcast of the surgeries was a first for SOLACI, as it featured Chinese experts performing procedures on-site and delivering keynote presentations. The event was highly praised by the conference organizers, who highlighted the excellence of both the surgical techniques and the domestically produced medical devices. SOLACI is one of the most prestigious cardiovascular interventional therapy conferences in Latin America, attracting over 2,000 participants this year. The inclusion of Chinese medical professionals in such a high-profile event reflects the global recognition of China’s advancements in medical technology and clinical practice. This achievement marks a new era in the application of hybrid technologies in the treatment of congenital heart diseases.
