Celebration

It's been a week of slow-paced routines, filled with moments of ease and joy. This past week has been all about taking things at a comfortable pace—work done steadily, plenty of cuddles shared freely, and nestled right in the middle of it all, a lovely celebration on July 4th. Typically, our Independence Day celebrations are vibrant and packed with activities: starting with a parade, hosting a big gathering at our home with friends and family, indulging in far too much food, splashing around in the pool with the kids, a trip to the local ice cream shop, and finally, the highlight—our impressive collection of fireworks. Chris and his buddies always go the extra mile, driving long distances and spending a fortune to bring back a spectacular display. We’d lay out pillows and blankets under the stars, the kids dozing off as the sky lights up with colorful bursts, and the distant thunder of neighboring displays adding to the magic. This year, however, everything felt different. We’re in a new city, meeting new people, and Aliyah isn’t here yet since she’ll be joining us later. It’s a fresh tune to our familiar Fourth of July rhythm, but I’m okay with it. Instead of the usual extravaganza, we kept things simple. We picked up some sparklers and fountain fireworks, took naps, enjoyed a barbecue with some of Chris' family who are visiting, and mostly just soaked in the moment together. As the sun set over Florida, our neighborhood began to buzz with the sounds of fireworks starting early. Wrapping ourselves in a quilt on the lawn, my little free spirit and I sat in anticipation, ready to light up our sparklers and fountains. Our initial plan was to relax with our modest display and then call it a night, lulled to sleep by the booming displays above. But life had other plans. The sparklers turned out to be just the warm-up act. Before long, we found ourselves hopping into the car and cruising through nearby neighborhoods to catch the best views of the stunning firework shows lighting up the bay. It was like an encore performance, and we were lucky enough to experience it. In the end, it was a relaxed yet spontaneous celebration, one that felt uniquely perfect. As Martha Washington once said, “Think of the magic of that foot, comparatively small, upon which your whole weight rests. It’s a miracle, and the dance... is a celebration of that miracle.” Even though this year was different, even though Aliyah couldn’t join us, it was still a celebration. A special one with my littlest, and the magic in those quiet, intimate moments? That alone makes it worth cherishing.
