Kaihua County in Zhejiang Province is known as the "Hometown of Golden Mushrooms." Recently, I visited Zhengjia Village in Huaying Township to learn more about local mushroom farming. When I asked who was the most skilled at growing mushrooms, the villagers unanimously pointed to Zheng Zhengzhong. Following their suggestion, I made my way to his home—a brand-new, three-story building that looked both modern and well-maintained. Inside, the decor was stylish, and Zheng Zhengzhong proudly explained that this was the result of a decade of hard work in mushroom cultivation.
When I asked him about his secret to success, he smiled and shared what he called the "three key words" for raising mushrooms: good, early, and clever.
The first word is "good." This refers to the quality of the mushrooms and the bacteria used. He emphasized that every step of the process must be done carefully, without any shortcuts. Each year, his mushroom strains are among the best in the area, which gives him a solid foundation for success.
The second word is "early." This means being proactive—securing land before others and starting harvests ahead of time. While other farmers were still picking their first batch, Zheng Zhengzhong was already harvesting his second. As a result, he always recoups his costs quickly and starts making a real profit early in the season.
The third word is "clever." This involves adapting production based on weather, climate, and market conditions. He closely follows weather forecasts and plans accordingly. For instance, by timing his harvests to coincide with colder periods, he can sell his mushrooms at higher prices—sometimes several times the usual rate. At the same time, he keeps a close eye on market trends, ensuring that when others are struggling, he still has a steady supply, allowing him to maintain the highest prices in the market.
Thanks to this "three-word strategy," Zheng Zhengzhong has consistently earned a good income for over ten years. Even during the unusually warm winter of 2006, when many farmers suffered losses, he still managed to make a net profit of over 30,000 yuan. No wonder the locals consider him the best at raising mushrooms.
Today, his life is truly blossoming—like sesame flowers in full bloom.
