Daily management of chicks

Maintaining the health and well-being of chicks requires consistent observation and proper care. First, pay close attention to their behavior and mental state. Check if they are sleeping peacefully, if their appetite is normal, and if they are drinking enough water. Observe the consistency and odor of their droppings, as well as whether they are eating the right amount of feed—neither too little nor too much. Any changes in these behaviors could be early signs of illness or stress. Second, keep the feeding area clean at all times. Rinse the waterer and feeders daily to prevent contamination, and make sure to replace the bedding regularly. A clean environment reduces the risk of disease and keeps the chicks comfortable. Third, monitor the temperature carefully. Chicks need a warm and stable environment to grow properly. As they mature, their ability to tolerate cold improves, so gradually reduce the temperature. Start by lowering the daytime temperature and keeping it warmer at night. After a few days, slowly eliminate the heating altogether. The goal is to ensure the birds don’t shiver, don’t feel cold, and aren’t overactive due to discomfort. Fourth, always remove dead chicks from the coop immediately to prevent the spread of disease. If you notice any sick birds, isolate them and provide appropriate treatment. It’s also wise to administer preventive medications to the entire flock if there's an outbreak. If the cause of death isn't clear, consider sending a sample to a local veterinary clinic for analysis. Lastly, adding grit to the diet can help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Grit isn’t a substitute for feed, but it aids in breaking down food in the gizzard. For free-range or caged chickens, mix about 1% medium-sized grit into their feed on a weekly basis. This simple addition can significantly enhance their overall health and growth.
