Winter greenhouse vegetable fertilization technology

When winter arrived, the author was guiding vegetable production in the countryside and observed that many farmers were overusing fertilizers, often applying excessive amounts. This led to soil compaction, root rot, and plant wilting, which significantly harmed the economic benefits of greenhouse vegetables. Based on years of practical experience, the author recommends four effective methods for fertilizing vegetables: (a) Combining organic and inorganic fertilizers. This approach blends slow-release and fast-acting nutrients. Many farmers rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, which can lower soil temperature. Common choices like ammonium nitrate or urea may promote quick growth, but they lack long-term benefits, leading to early aging in plants. On the other hand, using products like cottonseed cake, soybean cake, or diammonium phosphate may not be as effective due to the time required for fermentation. (b) Combining topdressing with basal fertilization. This method uses compound fertilizers to provide a balanced nutrient supply. By combining topdressing with basal application, farmers can address issues like surface root nutrient deficiencies. Topdressing also helps activate the soil layer, increase root elongation, and provide essential nutrients to the plants. (c) Combining large water irrigation with small water flushing. Many farmers apply large amounts of water during both seedling and fruiting stages, which can cause problems such as seedling diseases, root rot, and poor drainage. Whether using bio-fertilizers, organic, or chemical fertilizers, it's important to apply them in appropriate amounts and cultivate the soil after watering to maintain good aeration and structure. (d) Combining biological and chemical fertilizers. Bio-fertilizers contain beneficial bacteria that help activate the soil, raise soil temperature, and regulate nutrient availability. When used alongside inorganic fertilizers, they can reduce soil damage, increase organic matter, enhance nutrient efficiency, and support healthy root development. This combination promotes sustainable and efficient vegetable farming practices.
