**Atractylodes Cultivation Techniques: Key Points to Know**
1. **Growth Habits**: Atractylodes thrives in cooler climates and is sensitive to high temperatures and humidity. It can tolerate cold, and young seedlings can withstand short periods of frost. However, excessive heat increases the risk of disease.
2. **Land Selection**: Choose loose, fertile, well-drained soil for planting. Avoid clay or sandy soils, as they are unsuitable for Atractylodes. The plant is highly sensitive to waterlogging and cannot be grown continuously on the same land for more than five years. It's best to follow crops from the cruciferous or solanaceae families, and legumes are also a good option.
3. **Seed Selection**: Use two-year-old seeds of *Atractylodes chinensis* for better yield, medicinal value, larger root size, and stronger disease resistance. Select plump, yellow-black seeds that are large in size. One-year-old seeds are not recommended due to their weak resistance to diseases.
4. **Sowing Methods**: Plant between late March and early April. Soak the seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours, then mix them with fine sand (1 part seed to 2 parts sand) and place them in a sheltered area at 25–30°C. Keep the mixture moist. After 2–4 days, when small white buds appear, you can sow them. Prepare furrows spaced 27 cm apart, 10 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Sow about 5–6 kg per mu.
5. **Field Management**: Water during early morning or evening if there is a long dry period; avoid watering at noon. Drainage is essential after heavy rain. Atractylodes is very sensitive to excess moisture. Remove side shoots and apply 1 kg of sulfuric acid per acre as top dressing to increase yield by up to 25%. During the hot and rainy season (June to August), the incidence of disease increases, so it's important to spray fungicides like carbendazim or bactericidal agents regularly.
