How to raise early weaned piglets

In order to enhance the reproductive performance of sows, modern pig farms commonly implement early weaning techniques for piglets at 21 days old. At this stage, the digestive system of the piglets is still developing, and their immune systems are not fully matured. Therefore, it's essential to provide proper feeding and management to ensure a high survival rate and healthy growth. But how should we properly raise early weaned piglets? First, prepare the nursery area in advance. The nursery pen should be divided into indoor and outdoor sections for better hygiene, disease prevention, and easier feeding. The indoor area should include a heating zone, feeding troughs, and resting areas, while the outdoor section should have waterers, exercise spaces, and waste areas. Two weeks before the pigs arrive, the pens should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using two different disinfectants. Second, group the piglets appropriately. Piglets should be grouped based on size, sex, and weight, typically 10 to 20 per group, with each pig having about 1 square meter of space. It's best to keep them in their original groups to reduce stress. Before moving them in, spray and disinfect each pig individually to calm them down and prevent fighting. To strengthen their immunity, you can give them an electrolyte solution containing 25g glucose, 4.5g sodium chloride, 2g sodium bicarbonate, 0.3g citric acid, 0.2g potassium acetate, 0.05g potassium chloride, and add water to make 1 liter. Third, use specialized weaning feed. Early weaned piglets need to be fed with a specially formulated diet to minimize weaning stress and support the development of their digestive and immune systems. These feeds usually contain easily digestible ingredients like whey powder, expanded soybeans, fish meal, plasma protein, and fat powder. They also include acidifiers (such as citric acid), enzyme supplements (like protease, amylase, and pectinase), phytase, probiotics, and prebiotics. These additives help maintain a healthy gut environment, boost pepsin activity, improve digestion, and reduce the negative effects of anti-nutritional factors. Fourth, manage feeding carefully. Piglets weighing around 12 kg should be fed weaning feed five times a day, every 2.5 hours, with each meal filling them up to 80%. Once they reach 12 kg, gradually transition them to starter feed, reducing the number of meals to four per day, every 3 hours. Each time, feed just enough so that there is no leftover food. Controlled feeding helps digestion and promotes better growth. After reaching 20 kg, the weaning period can be considered complete, and they can be moved to the next phase of growth.
