Chinese medicine drop pills market

In the past, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had clear advantages in managing chronic conditions but was not typically used as an emergency treatment. TCM formulations were traditionally made into pills, powders, ointments, and tonics, and have since evolved into second-generation forms such as tablets, capsules, oral liquids, and injectables. With the development of new administration routes, proprietary TCM products like drop pills (e.g., Quick Rescue Pills, Compound Danshen Dripping Pills) and injections (e.g., Qing Kai Ling Injection) can now be used for emergency care. Therefore, promoting innovation in TCM pharmaceuticals is not only essential for the development of TCM itself, but also crucial for companies to gain a competitive edge in the market. Drop pills represent a revolutionary advancement in TCM formulation. According to Gu Haiou, Chief Engineer at Beijing Tongrentang Technology Co., Ltd., drop pills are prepared by extracting the active ingredients from traditional herbal medicines using modern technology and then producing them like chemical drugs. The technology was introduced into TCM production in the late 1970s with the development of Su Bing Pills by the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Industry Research Institute. Drop pills are convenient to take and swallow, especially when placed under the tongue, which allows for rapid disintegration and quick absorption—often effective within one minute without passing through the liver first. This makes them particularly suitable for treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular emergencies. Products such as Su Bing Dripping Pills, Guanxin Suhe Dripping Pills, Suxiao Jiuxin Pills, and Compound Danshen Dripping Pills are widely accepted by both clinicians and patients, offering more options for clinical use. Tongrentang's Guanxin Suhe Dripping Pill was developed in the mid-1980s based on the original Damai Pill formula. The company currently has four drop pill products in its portfolio. Yang Xiaohong, Director of the Chief Engineer's Office at Tianjin No. 6 Chinese Medicine Factory, noted that compared to traditional honey pills, while the taste of drop pills may be less palatable, modern extraction techniques have significantly improved their efficacy, leading to a multiplier effect in performance. Lu Lizhu, Director of the Pharmacy Department at Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, highlighted the unique role of TCM in acute illness treatment. Drop pills have propelled TCM into a new technological era, achieving the "three smalls," "three effects," and "five conveniences": small dosage, low toxicity, minimal side effects; long-lasting, fast-acting, and highly effective; and convenient for production, storage, transportation, use, and carrying. According to Yang Xiaohong, the production process of drop pills is relatively simple. Unlike traditional pill-making, it involves no dust, making it safer for workers. The equipment is easy to operate, the production cycle is short, and it supports continuous, automated manufacturing, resulting in high efficiency and lower costs. The final product has a uniform appearance, consistent weight, and accurate dosing. Currently, drop pills can be shaped into spheres, olives, or ellipses. Despite the success of drop pills, challenges remain. While some manufacturers have achieved industrialization, the specialized equipment required for large-scale production is still difficult to obtain. Many companies develop their own machinery, as seen in the case of Tianjin No. 6 Chinese Medicine Factory, which has created three generations of self-made drop pill machines, each obtaining exclusive patents. However, globally, there are few manufacturers of drop pill equipment, and domestically, the pharmaceutical machinery industry lags behind, needing further development. Experts suggest that to promote the growth of drop pill products—currently generating around 2 billion yuan in sales—relevant departments should establish national standards for drop pill equipment to ensure quality control and support efficient production. As the demand for innovative TCM continues to rise, drop pills are proving to be a promising and practical solution in modern healthcare.
