Bellow fruit
Section: Rosaceae
Category: Shrubs
Division: Angiosperms
Class: Dicots
Subclass:
Scientific Name: Physocarpus amurensis
Ecological Habits:
This plant thrives in full sun and can tolerate partial shade. It is highly cold-resistant and drought-tolerant, making it suitable for a variety of soil conditions.
Morphological Features:
Physocarpus amurensis is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. The bark peels longitudinally, and the branchlets are cylindrical. Young branches are purple in color, turning grayish-brown as they mature. The leaves are alternate, triangular-ovate or round-ovate, measuring 3.5–5.5 cm in length and 3–5 cm in width. The leaf tips are acute or acuminate, while the base is cordate or slightly cordate. The margins are serrated, and the lower surface is slightly twisted with fine hairs. The petioles range from 1.2 to 2.5 cm in length, and the stipules are lanceolate, about 6–7 mm long.
The inflorescence is an umbel-like raceme, located at the top of the branches, with a diameter of 3–4 cm. The flowers are white, with a diameter of 0.8–1.3 cm. The fruits are ovoid, red-brown in color, and split open when cooked. Each fruit contains 2–5 spherical seeds.
In late spring, the leaves turn golden yellow, and the flowering period occurs in June. By early autumn, the fruits develop into bright red, adding visual interest to the landscape.
Native Distribution:
This species is native to areas such as Maoershan in Heilongjiang, Wuling Mountain in Hebei, and Chengde. It is also found in the Far East of the former Soviet Union and on the Korean Peninsula.
Propagation Method:
Physocarpus amurensis can be propagated through sowing seeds or by taking cuttings.
Uses:
Known for its attractive summer blooms and dense clusters of white flowers, this shrub also produces striking red fruits in early autumn. Its ornamental value makes it ideal for planting alone in grassy areas or among rocks. It is also commonly used for fencing, slope stabilization, and border planting along forest edges.
