Cycad reproduction primarily relies on seed propagation and tillering. However, due to the difficulty in obtaining seeds, tillering has become the main method of propagation. This technique is not only efficient but also allows for faster growth and more consistent results. The best time to propagate cycads is during early spring, typically between January and February. At this time, the plant is entering its active growth phase, which increases the chances of successful rooting. To begin, select axillary buds from mature cycads that are at least three years old or have 4–5 leaves. These buds are more developed, with a higher degree of lignification, meaning they are more mature and contain more nutrients. This makes them more resilient and better suited for propagation. Avoid using tender or young buds, as they are more fragile and prone to rot. When taking the buds, use a sharp, clean knife to carefully cut them from the base of the plant. Be gentle to avoid damaging the mother plant. If the buds are already rooted, they can be directly planted into a well-draining soil mix rich in humus. If not, allow the cut ends to dry in a cool, ventilated area for 2–3 days before planting. This helps prevent infection and encourages root development. Plant the buds in a pot filled with a mixture of 45% humus, 20% mycorrhizal soil, 30% river sand, and 5% calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer. Make sure the soil is loose and well-drained—avoid using clay, as it retains too much moisture and can lead to root rot. The planting depth should be about half the height of the axillary bud. Before planting, treat the cut surface with wood ash, charcoal powder, or sulfur to prevent decay. After planting, water the soil lightly and place the pot in a bright, indirect light location. New roots usually appear within 2 months, and new leaves may start to emerge within 3–4 months. Once the new leaves are strong enough, transplant the young plants into their permanent growing medium. Continue to provide adequate light, water, and nutrients. Cycads prefer full sun, especially when they are actively growing, as this helps maintain their compact and attractive shape. Watering should be done sparingly, following the principle of "dry before watering." Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. Fertilization should be moderate; cycads do not require heavy feeding. A diluted liquid fertilizer such as 0.3% urea, 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or 0.1% ferrous sulfate can be applied every 20 days during the growing season. With proper care and attention, cycad propagation through tillering can be a rewarding and effective way to grow these unique and beautiful plants.
