Each printed character includes a dot matrix consisting of lines or columns of ink drops. Inside the printhead, the ink is sent to the drop applier under pressure and ejected through a very small nozzle to form a very thin ink line. By proper conditioning, the ink droplet splitting process can occur in the charging bath. When the ink droplets are split, the printer adds a voltage to the charging bath and then electrostatically charges each ink droplet. The size of the charge carried by the ink droplets is determined by the voltage of the charging cell. The ink droplets then pass through the electrostatic field between the two high voltage deflection plates. Depending on the size of the electrostatic charge carried by each ink droplet, the direction of flight of each charged droplet will deflect. No electrostatic charge is applied to the ink droplets that do not need to be printed, and these ink droplets are collected in the retraction tube.
