Peacock bamboo pole (Figure)
The peacock bamboo grasshopper, also known as the five-colored Ge Yunjin, is a striking perennial evergreen plant that belongs to the genus Pterophylla. This unique species stands out due to its vibrant foliage and fascinating leaf movements, making it a popular choice for gardeners and plant enthusiasts alike.
The peacock bamboo has a short, tuberous base and typically grows to a height of 30 to 50 cm. Its leaves are large, ovate-elliptic in shape, and grow in a basal rosette. Each leaf can reach up to 20–30 cm in length and about 10 cm in width. The upper surface of the leaves is deep purple with a fine layer of white hairs, while the underside features a soft lavender color. One of the most distinctive features of this plant is the intricate pattern of veins on the leaf surface. The main veins run from the center to the edges, and between them, smaller veins form a feathery structure that resembles the tail feathers of a peacock—hence its common name.
Another remarkable characteristic of the peacock bamboo grasshopper is its "sleep movement." At night, the leaves fold tightly around the leaf sheath, forming an egg-like shape. As the sun rises, they gradually unfold and return to their normal position. This behavior not only adds a touch of elegance to the plant but also helps protect it from excessive moisture and temperature changes.
With its eye-catching appearance and unique behavior, the peacock bamboo grasshopper is more than just a decorative plant—it's a living work of art that brings life and movement to any garden or indoor space.
